How it's calculated

Three tax brackets in 2026

Salary is taxed in Box 1. In 2026 there are three brackets: 35.75% up to €38,883, 37.56% up to €78,426, and 49.50% above that.

Two tax credits

Two tax credits are taken off the tax you owe: the general tax credit (up to €3,115 in 2026) and the labour tax credit (up to €5,685 in 2026). Both get smaller as your income rises.

Holiday pay

Holiday pay is taxed at a special rate. It covers the tax on that extra income, plus the tax credits it makes smaller. That's why the rate on holiday pay is often higher than your top bracket.

The 30% ruling in 2026

Your employer can pay up to 30% of your salary tax-free. Since 1 January 2026, only salary up to €262,000 counts, for everyone with the ruling. Your taxable salary, after the tax-free part, must also be above €48,013 (€36,497 if you're under 30 with a Dutch-level master's degree).

From 2027

From 1 January 2027, the tax-free part drops to 27%, unless the ruling was first applied to your salary by 31 December 2023. Rulings that started in 2025 or later also need a higher salary from 2027. That amount isn't published yet.

An estimate based on 2026 Dutch tax law: Box 1 brackets, the general tax credit and the labour tax credit. Your employer pays the health insurance contribution (Zvw), so it doesn't affect your net pay. Pension contributions and personal deductions are left out, so your payslip will usually show less. Not personal tax advice: for your own situation, check with the Belastingdienst or a Dutch tax adviser.
