Broker and fund comparison
Costs, Box 3 treatment and expat requirements for the brokers and funds you can actually use in the Netherlands.
Nothing you type leaves your browser.
The short version
- Opening an account Every broker here asks for your BSN or a tax number when you open an account. If yours hasn't arrived yet, ask the broker what to use before you start.
- Lowest cost for monthly investing With one all-world fund such as VWCE, Trading 212 and DEGIRO come out cheapest in this comparison for monthly amounts from €100 to €2,000. Neither charges a custody fee. Trading 212 charges no commission and DEGIRO €1 per trade, so the gap is about €12 a year.
- Already with ABN AMRO ABN AMRO charges €0 per trade on more than 200 ETFs and 200 funds, including NT World (0.15% a year) and NT EM (0.25%). You pay a service fee of 0.20% a year up to €100,000, and you need an ABN AMRO current account, from €4.30 a month.
These are facts to start from, not a recommendation for your situation. What's cheapest for you depends on how much and how often you invest. The cost optimiser below works it out for your numbers.

How this is modeled: every all-world fund at every broker that carries it, ranked by what you'd keep after costs. Costs are charged on the average of start/end-of-year balance; one trade per fund per month. Dividend lekkage rates are approximate and vary by fund. Per-trade caps and tiered custody are simplified, and currency-conversion (FX) fees — e.g. Trading 212's 0.15% on non-euro trades — are not modeled, so figures are a close guide rather than an exact quote. Box 3 wealth tax is excluded — it applies equally to every option and is handled in the FIRE Calculator.
Estimates only — not financial advice. These rankings are illustrative projections based on the assumptions above, not a recommendation to choose any fund or broker. Investing involves risk — the value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you invested. Projected returns are assumptions, not guarantees, and are not a reliable indicator of future results. Verify current fees with each provider and do your own research.

"Covers" tells you what's inside. A single all-world fund (VWCE) holds developed + emerging markets in one. Otherwise you combine a developed-world fund (NT World, IWDA) with an emerging-markets fund (NT EM, EMIM) — typically ~85–90% / 10–15%. Compare costs for these complete strategies in the Cost Optimizer above; only compare two funds against each other if they cover the same thing.
NL-domiciled funds (NT World, NT EM) can only be bought through Dutch banks, such as ABN AMRO and Rabobank. Ireland-domiciled ETFs (VWCE, IWDA) are available at most brokers here. All funds here are taxed as Box 3 investments.
What the usual comparisons miss
Dividend tax leakage
When a fund receives dividends from the companies it owns, some tax is taken off before the money reaches the fund. The part the fund can't reclaim is called dividend leakage (dividendlekkage). Over many years it can cost as much as the fund's ongoing costs. How much depends on where the fund is based, which is why the domicile column matters. Funds based in Ireland, such as VWCE and IWDA, pay 15% tax on US dividends under the tax treaty between Ireland and the US.
Trading and custody fees
A fund's ongoing cost is only part of what you pay. You may also pay a fee per trade and a yearly custody or service fee. For someone investing monthly, DEGIRO charges €1 per trade on its core ETF list (around €12 a year) with no custody fee. ABN AMRO charges €0 per trade on its ETFs and funds, but a service fee of 0.20% a year, and its current account costs from €4.30 a month.
BSN, passport and bank account
Brokers in the Netherlands, including DEGIRO, ABN AMRO, ING and LYNX, ask for a BSN when you open an account, and a new BSN can take several weeks to arrive. Trading 212 asks for a tax identification number, which for people who pay tax in the Netherlands is normally the BSN. If you have a non-EU passport, acceptance differs per broker, and some also need a Dutch bank account. The broker table notes this for each one.
Fees and fund costs checked on each broker's tariff page and each fund's own documents in October 2026. Where a fee has tiers, the tool uses the first tier. Broker fees change often, so check the current rates on the broker's own website before opening an account. Box 3 treatment follows the 2026 rules. Not financial advice.
